Aurat Mard Aur Mein is a short Urdu novel written y a talented writer, novelist, and story-teller Umera Ahmed. This is a very cleverly written and profound narrative given from three perspectives: a woman’s, a man’s, and the third, the devil’s. It conveys a rather serious message in a very simple language. Earlier, Aurat Mard Aur Mein novel was published in Darbar-e-Dil. In this novel, the writer highlights several social and moral issues of our society.

Woman
A very long time ago, God created humans or rather, Man, and at that time God did not create me; He only made Man. He then granted Man knowledge and commanded the angels to bow to him. I did not exist at that point. God created me much later, and the strange thing is that God made Man out of clay. He used dull, lifeless clay; clay that did not even exude fragrance. I on the other hand however, was created from Man’s rib. Is it not then strange, that God made me from something that He Himself granted the power of knowledge to? That I was created from a being that the angels were ordered to bow to?
And that a refusal to do so earned the archangel Iblees the everlasting wrath of God? That I was derived from a being whom God chose to send down to earth as His ambassador? What a strange thing it is indeed, that the material He used to make Man was so common and ordinary and what He used to create me was so much more superior. Yet, down here on earth I have never been accorded that same respect, appreciation, and importance that Man has always enjoyed.
Man:
No creature on this Earth has ever performed his responsibilities with as much hard work, honesty, love and sincerity as I have. It is only due to my endeavors that you see such progress here on Earth today. Even though I was faced with numerous trials and tribulations I managed to perform my duties well. Still, I am not appreciated for it. There are objections to my every act, and my every intension is doubted. Hurdles are planted in my way and the most devastating thing is that no one is happy with me even then… even God.
And the reason for all this is woman who has taken it upon herself to misguide me for all eternity. I accept that the devil is stronger than her, but what angers me is why she never tries to fight him. Why does she let him gain control over her so easily? Then there is Man. He is always trying to fight the devil. Why is the devil unable to conquer a Man as easily as he does Woman? And then she acts the victim. There is no match for a woman’s cunning. She always tries to challenge my authority and tries to be my equal, forgetting that it is I who has been appointed the ambassador of God.
Iblees
I have tricked man and woman into believing that their lives are empty and meaningless. And then what does he not do in order to fill these voids? But you already know that; for after all you are Man.
But instead of all this I am terrified; so terrified that I cannot sleep at night. I am terrified of those people whom God addressed as “My followers”. I know for a fact that they still exist in this world… despite all my efforts and if… if… those followers increase in number, what will happen then? These thoughts then keep me sleepless at night and restless in the day. But then my thoughts turn to all of you; all of “you”. So I take a deep breath and close my eyes; at peace and at rest.
