The novel Aks by Umera Ahmed (English: Reflection) tells the story of hardship, injustice, traumatic childhood experiences, and crippling obstacles in life. It’s a story of bravery, tenacity, refusing to give up, and getting back up after every faceplant. In Pakeeza Digest, Aks was published from August 2011 until December 2012.
Although the queen is the strongest piece in a chess game, the entire strategy revolves around the king’s display of strength and his ultimate victory—capturing the opposing king and declaring check mate. Eight-year-old Chirya is not quite happy with this arrangement. Chirya maintains that as the queen is the strongest piece in chess, she should be considered the most “important” piece, not the king. And Chirya is going to do just that in the actual game of chess: elevate the queen to the position of most importance.
